Crystals 101: A Skeptic’s Guide to How They Work

Crystals 101

We are almost always surrounded by crystals, and I am not just talking about your salt lamp.

I bet you are reading this on a computer, smartphone or a tablet right now. Some of those screens are made from crystals, and silicone crystals can be found in their interior components. Microelectronics, polarizers (yep, those hella cute sunglasses you bought count), the diamond on your ring, and even pencil graphite are crystals.

So what is a crystal anyway? A crystal is a material that is composed of lattice structure on a molecular level. It always looks like a repeating pattern that is mathematically perfect and fits together just right.

Crystals are useful in science – particularly technology – because their lattice structure allows for energy to be filtered or changed as it passes through it, depending on the type of molecules that make up the crystal.

For example, remember that clear prism from science class? The one where when light passed through at a particular angle and the prism divided white light into its component wavelengths? The crystal changed white light into a beautiful, perfect rainbow.

This is how many crystals work. Depending on the material they are made of, the crystal can magnify or modify energy.

We aren’t building lasers here, but the same principle can be applied to using crystals to magnify or modify our own personal energy.

How crystals work for us

Crystals vibrate.

Well, everything moves somewhat. Temperature is a measurement of the movement of molecules, so unless we are working with absolute zero, literally everything has some energy from molecular motion.

However, crystals are a bit more special. You see, with the lattice structure of crystal molecules that natural movement of energy ends up being more of a vibration. Instead of getting super technical on you, I am just going to drop this link from UCLA for anyone interested in a very quick brainy read about the vibrational energy of crystals.

For the rest of us, let me summarize. Crystals have a great deal of vibrational energy, and more can be added to the crystal and the crystal itself can release the energy in fun size quantum packets.

We are creatures of energy -we create energy through our thoughts, actions, and our body just does it by itself. We get to higher states of energy through meditation, prayer, chakra work, etc. Some people can even see energy auras. Even if you are a skeptic about the more magical and esoteric capabilities of humans, we all agree that we have energy.

The latent energy in crystals, when brought into our own energy field, affects us. Our energy responds to it.

Our thoughts vibrate.

Activity in the brain is usually referred to as a brainwave because the electrical impulses carrying information actually do function as waves. They are cyclical in nature and have a frequency and everything.

They vibrate. Just like a crystal.

You can even change how fast your thoughts vibrate through meditation. Cool, huh?

In fact, our conscious thoughts are something that we have tons of control over. They have vibrating or wavelike energy, just like a crystal. They are VERY similar in this way, and we can take advantage of that by syncing our own thought energy to the crystal to affect change.

We do that by programming the crystal.

Crystals can be programmed.

Yep, programmed. And instead of using Java, Python, or C++ as a programming language, we use the vibrational energy of our mind.

Crystals work by magnifying or modifying energies, but we have to add energy to them so that they know what to do. We already know that our vibrating thoughts work in the same way as a crystal’s vibrations, so we simply think about what we want to get from working with the crystal, and directing it to the crystal. Visualize your energy entering the crystal, causing it to glow with your intended purpose.

This is called programming. We set an INTENTION for the crystal by simply directing our thoughts to the stone and letting it do the rest.

I use positive affirmations when I program crystals because it has had the best results for me. So instead of “I want to not be so anxious”, change that around to “I am at peace.” Then I visualize warm golden energy going from me to the crystal, I see it glow, and then I feel the energy is changed within my own aura when that crystal is nearby.

Since crystals pick up energy all the time, cleanse them once in a while by rinsing with water, smudging with sage, or letting them sit in the moonlight.

So what crystals should we use?

Just like in tech components, crystals work by magnifying or modifying energy. They take it in, diffuse it, double it, or change it in some way, and then discharge the energy in neat little quantum packets.

The qualities that a crystal possesses are determined by its molecular makeup, its type.

When we want to program a crystal for a certain intention, it is best to choose one that possesses the qualities we want in our outcome. I wouldn’t make sunglasses out of thick selenite, because though it can polarize light we can’t see through it!

There are thousands upon thousands of different crystals, so be sure to look up their qualities online before you shop or ask the shopkeeper. When you go, be sure to pay attention to more than just what it SHOULD do, and FEEL the crystal. How does it feel to the touch? Can you feel it vibrate? What does your intuition tell you about this crystal? Trust yourself.

Crystals work by multiplying or modifying our natural energies. Because crystals vibrate just like our brainwaves, we use our minds to program them with our intention through visualization and positive affirmations. Crystal healing uses a carefully selected crystal based on its molecular attributes to change or boost our energy in a way that is beneficial to us.
